Update on Haiti Relief Effort - Help for Orphans International

Dear Friends and New Friends,

This is my personal update that I want to share with you today. If you didn't read my email from 2 days ago it is at the bottom of this one.

Help for Orphans International has a volunteer named Jonathan on the ground in Haiti right now. He is a pilot, personally using his own plane. I hear directly from Jonathan everyday.

He said there is a BIG need for morphine here in the hospitals (or at least oral narcotics). They are doing amputations without it. That might be the single most important item to distribute now. Apparently there are quantities in Port Au Prince but the army has taken over and distribution is very slow. Pass the word.

As I mentioned before, Jonathan has this knowledge because he has the only small aircraft on the ground in Haiti right now, which is shuttling in supplies and help. Due to his tireless efforts he has been able to bring medical personnel, supplies, food, water and medication directly to the people who need it most. It is because of the money we raise that enables him to continue to pay for fuel and supplies.

I want you to think about this for a minute. Can you imagine if your child, your brother, or your grandchild was in severe pain for days on end, with no medical care? Can you imagine your child losing ALL the family they have ever known and left to fend for themselves on the streets, surrounded by decomposing bodies? This is the situation for so many in Haiti.

These children need our help. I realize I may be sounding very dramatic here but this is the honest truth. I need every one of you to understand and pass on how severely help is needed there. Most of us, if not all, take for granted the food and water we have at our disposal. So many lives are being lost in Haiti – today - because they are lacking the simple essentials.

So, please, give whatever you can. A few dollars from everyone reading this will make a huge difference. Give up the Starbucks for just one week.

I am urging you to please read this message and respond accordingly and then to please forward this on to all your contacts.

As you may know, I am fortunate to be working for Help for Orphans International, a charity founded by Sarah Ehrlich four years ago. She has done a lot of work helping orphans in Kenya and is now solely focused on helping the orphans affected by the earthquake in Haiti.

I don't like to spread bad news but we have a volunteer from our organization who's been on the ground there since over a week ago. Words cannot describe the devastation that he has described to me. Imagine a little child losing ALL their family, wounded, no place to live and with little food/water. This is TRULY the situation.

Sarah and myself are going to Haiti in the next few days to raise awareness and to strategize HOW we are most effectively going to help. We will also be purchasing food/formula/diapers in the Dominican Republic to bring to the most hard hit areas.

Our volunteer there named Jonathan flew his 4 seater aircraft 2000 miles from Sag Harbor, NY and is shuttling back and forth between neighboring areas bringing supplies and medical personnel to the most desperate areas. Today he texted me that he was enroute to bring saws and morphine to a medical unit there.

The only way we can keep him doing this is to continue to send him funds.

Do NOT think that they have ENOUGH help because they don't. What we are doing IS making a difference! Jonathan says that he has the only small aircraft shuttling that he has seen. Additionally, because his aircraft is so small he has been cleared to land at Port au Prince airport.

We can NOT continue to do what we're doing without more donations! There's just NO way! Sadly, the surrounding areas have taken advantage of this tragedy and the cost of fuel and food etc.. has skyrocketed! Google Boggles - Again

It should be no surprise that I've been thinking about Web marketing for the last few days.

A lot!

And I'm hoping that some of the stuff I've been thinking about will trigger ideas you can use to turn the Internet into a gigantic cash cow for you:

One thousand, six-hundred million dollars …

… That's what Google paid the two guys who created YouTube.com.

Just picture that. What's that you say? You can't picture what one-point-six billion bucks really means?

Try this …

* Invest $1.6 billion in bonds paying just 5%, and you and your heirs will get $80 million interest - every year, forever …

* Haul that many simoleons into a Porsche dealership, and you can drive away with a fleet of more than thirteen thousand 911 Turbos …

* Lay that many $1 bills end to end, and they'll stretch around planet Earth nearly six times - at the equator!

Let's just bask in the warm glow of that sweet thought for a moment …

You have a short meeting with some nice folks scheduled for tomorrow morning. There will be coffee and danish … some friendly chit-chat … you'll sign a couple of papers …

… And when it's over, you'll walk out the door into a brand-new life of unlimited possibilities … total freedom … with hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars at your command.

How will you feel as you close the deal? What will you do first? How much time off will you take? Where will you go? What will you buy? What will you give away – and to whom?

Well, I know two guys who are living that impossible fantasy at this very moment. And you know what? I'm willing to bet neither one of those YouTube billionaires is one IQ point smarter than you.

So what the heck – let's think big for a moment. Instead of worrying about how to get a few hundred or a few thousand folks to visit your website, let’s think about …

How to make Google eager to pay YOU $1.6 billion

… So what did the YouTube guys do that was worth one-point-six billion smackers to Google? (Forgive me – I just love saying that number!)

Was it the payday for a lifetime of hard work? Nope – they'd only been in business a couple of years.

Think about that: $1.6 billion divided by two guys equals $800 million per guy. $800 million per guy divided by two years equals $400 million per year, per guy.

That's a salary of $192,307 per working hour!

Did they invent some kind of amazing new technology? Did they discover a way to make us all more productive? Richer? Thinner? Sexier? Immortal?

Uh-uh. In fact, the technology behind the YouTube website couldn't be simpler - nothing my Web guys couldn't crank out in a week.

So what was it about YouTube that made the Google guys and gals unlimber their checkbook?

One-word answer: Traffic.

See, nobody knows for sure how many websites (home pages) actually exist on the Web - but estimates range from around a couple billion (according to Google) to as high as 550 billion (according to Reuters). Plus, Berkeley says as many as 7.3 million new Web pages make their appearance every day of the year.

Now, if you're a media buyer looking to place your banner ads on some of these websites, you need to know how many folks are going to see your ad: How many eyeballs you're going to get for your money.

So you surf over to Alexa.Com (or Neilson, or another traffic rating service), click on "Traffic Rankings" and type in the URL of the site you're considering.

When we launched The Total Package in June of 2005, our Alexa ranking was, of course, dismal. A site designed to attract, oh, say white guys who can dance … or Democrats in favor of tax cuts … would have gotten more traffic than we did.

But as more and more nice folks found us, our traffic began to build.

In April, we were the 49,000th most-visited site on the Web. By June, we were in the top 35,000. Today, we're in the top 23,000. And this time next year, we hope to be in the top 10,000 sites on the Web.

YouTube.com is in the top ten: Its Alexa ranking is 8. That means only seven websites in the world get more traffic!

For every one million Web users, about 65,000 check out YouTube every single day. With about 200,000,000 Web users in the US alone, that means 13 million Americans get their YouTube fix - and see the banner ads placed there by advertisers - every bleedin' day. And that doesn't even begin to consider the hundreds of millions of Web users across the rest of the globe!

So now we know the real secret to getting Google to cut your $1.6 billion check …

Step #1: Get yourself a website.

Step #2: Get yourself an Alexa of 8.

Simple - right?

Well, not exactly …

Getting a website is the easy part. And that in itself is interesting. As I just said, my ResponseInk Web team could replicate the YouTube.com site for a couple thousand dollars in a matter of days. You don't need a fancy-schmancy site all geeked up with super-slick gadgets and gee-gaws. It's not about the technology.

Step #2, on the other hand - that top-ten Alexa - is another matter entirely.

But maybe if we think about it for a few minutes, we can figger out some stuff about how to do it …

What’s better than a naked lady?

You hear it all the time: Porn sites are the biggest pullers on the Web. It's not true. And that's good, because no way is The Redhead letting me go into THAT business!

So if I'm looking for a way to get my hands on Google's gazillions, there are only a few other choices available to me - only a few other types of sites out there …

* Search sites: Google (Alexa: 3) and Yahoo (Alexa: 1) both get nearly 300,000 visitors for every one million Web users. But the technology that drives them is unbelievably complex and would cost bazillions and take years to develop. So for me at least, setting out to compete with these giants would be pretty nutty.

* Software sites: Microsoft (Alexa: 16), Adobe (100) Cnet (104) Sitesell (287) .Mac (364) and other sites that sell, service and update popular computer programs. Only problem is, I don't own any proprietary software. Nor do I relish the thought of spending millions of dollars and a couple of years developing programs. So once again - probably not a great choice for my next business venture.

* Retail sites: Amazon (Alexa: 19), Spiegel (155), Netflix (250) , Target (276), Expedia (305) and Orbitz (445) are great and retail software is cheap. But setting up a big online store requires substantial investment in inventory and copious amounts of time to arrange deals with suppliers. That equals huge bucks - so I think I'll go another way.

* News & Information sites: Wikipedia (Alexa: 15), The New York Times (96), MapQuest (121) Weather.com (124) and many others get big traffic. But they also require enormous amounts of content, most or all created by the website owners at significant expense.

* Auction sites: eBay (Alexa: 12), plus sites like uBid, GunsAmerica, Onlineauction, and Priceline are great because they cost very little to set up. Better yet, you don’t have to create reams of content. Users do it all for you – and pay you for the privilege – when they post their items. Sweet!

* Community sites: Microsoft Network (MSN - Alexa: 2), MySpace (6), Fotolog (30), AOL (39), Metacafe (145), every blog and forum site you can name - and of course, YouTube.com - are red hot. The software is relatively cheap and easy to set up and once again, your users create all your content.

So for me at least, it’s a slam-dunk no-brainer: If I'm going after Google’s next $1.6 billion, I'm gonna launch a community site - preferably something structured to attract the largest possible number of users in the prime demographic: 18 to 35 year olds.

A good second choice? A niched community site designed to attract folks who are passionate about a particular subject - like NASCAR or fantasy football or even gerbil breeding. True, it's a smaller audience than YouTube gets, so I probably won't get the entire $1.6 billion - maybe only a couple hundred million, maybe.

Hint: If you're building a website for a business selling vitamins, create an entertaining, interactive site about health. Let your users talk to each other … share their knowledge. If nothing else, it's free content. And as we all know, the spiders (search engines) love traffic. That means they'll send you more traffic - and more prospects for your products.

Two elements your site must have for maximum traffic

And as you're designing your site, it would be a good idea to make sure it offers visitors the two things they want most on the Internet …

1. Entertainment: The Web is often billed as a great productivity booster. But while e-mail and the ability to research anything without leaving your desk does save tons of time every year, I'll bet you dollars to donuts that far more time is wasted online than saved.

Think about how you use the Web and you'll probably agree: The Internet really is The World-Wide Waste of Time!

That's not a bad thing, mind you. It’s just the truth. So for maximum traffic, it's a good idea to make sure your new site has plenty of rich media – video, audio and flash animation – and the viraler, the better.

Now, by "viraler," I mean that your rich media should have the potential to go viral on you. It should be so funny or fun or content-rich that everyone who sees it will want to send the link to a friend. Or better yet, to 20 or 30 friends.

2. Interactivity: This is where the "community" part comes in. See, community is more than just offering a lot of info about something folks are passionate about.

It's about allowing users to communicate with others … establish online friendships … expand their personal or business networks … show off their own knowledge or skills … make a name for themselves online … and enjoy their 15 minutes of fame in the virtual world.

That means your site should include plenty of opportunities for users to upload and download files, plus chat rooms … blogs … forums … and more.

All the traffic you could ever want - FREE

OK - so you've decided on a niche ' or a niche within a niche within a niche ' and you've set up your website with plenty of ways for users to waste time and interact with each other.

What now? How do you get thousands of people to your site?

Do you get a talking lizard and spend millions on TV like GEICO.com does?

Thankfully, that's not really necessary.

The cheapest, most effective way to build traffic is through word of mouth. And the cheapest, fastest way to get a buzz going about your site is with other sites that offer blogs and forums.

You could, for example …

* Create a video and post it to every video blog on the Web, along with the link to your site …

* Create an content-rich instructional audio and post the MP3 (and/or the link to it) on every blog and forum you can find …

* Create an involvement device - a poll or self-test of some kind, for example - and post links to it on every blog and forum you can find …

* Structure link exchanges with sites that attract your target demographic or psychographic …

… The sky's the limit!

Well, that's prolly enough to chew on this week - so masticate away …

Think:

"How can I use niche sites to kick my Web traffic into high gear?"

"How can I better use interactivity and entertainment and involvement devices to attract visitors to my site - and keep them coming back every day?"

"How can I use Web-based communities, bulletin boards, blogs, video blogs and forums to trigger a stampede of new users to my site?"

Do those three things - consistently - and the next Google windfall could be yours!

Something strange happened this week in Amazon.com's apparel section.

For a day or two, a black T-shirt featuring an image of three wolves baying at a full moon claimed the top slot at the online store's clothing bestseller list,, beating out the usual, unremarkable mix of Levi's 505 regular-fit jeans, Crocs clogs and Adidas running shoes.

And really, why wouldn't you buy the shirt, which is priced from $7.65 to $17.93, depending on your size? Just read the long and growing list of customer testimonials promising earth-shattering experiences or psychedelic vision quests upon purchase.

"I bought this shirt and instantly old girlfriends started calling me again," wrote one reviewer."My doctor says the cancer has gone into remission," wrote another. "

Thanks for changing my life!"The shirt's page at Amazon.com had quietly existed for years without much comment, but after a snarky link from CollegeHumor.com, the "Three Wolf Moon" shirt suddenly sprouted hundreds of five-star ratings.

Reviewers have dreamed up epics about its powers, weaving fantasies involving everything from the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland to the pop group Duran Duran.

As the joke caught on and got passed around the Web, Photoshopped spoofs of the shirt started appearing online -- featuring corgi puppies, spiders or haddock instead of the now-famous wolves.

CollegeHumor.com, a comedy site started in 1999 by a couple of high school friends who grew up together in Timonium, Md., also claimed victory this week for rigging an online poll run by the state of Nebraska to select a new license-plate design.

The site urged its readers to vote for what it deemed the most boring design available to Nebraska drivers. That gray-and-white plate won.Officials in Nebraska said they monitored Web traffic to screen out visitors coming directly from the humor site, but CollegeHumor.com was still, credibly, claiming the joke a success this week.

"Together we pranked the entire automobile-owning population of Nebraska," wrote a CollegeHumor.com editor, in a Wednesday posting. "Congratulations."

This type of online rabble-rousing appears to be catching on more than ever over the past year, said Tim Hwang, the organizer of ROFLCon, a convention dedicated to celebrating Internet memes.

After all, another Web-based prank crossed over into the real world just last month when a 21-year-old college student, known by the online moniker "m00t," sailed to the top of Time's "most influential person" list in an online poll, beating out the likes of President Obama and Oprah Winfrey.

Gathering nearly 17 million votes, the world's "most influential" person is the founder of another jokey Web culture site, 4chan.org, whose proprietor is known offline by the name Christopher Poole. If you don't get why the shirt, and its reviews, are so funny, don't worry.

CollegeHumor.com co-founder Josh Abramson said it's a case where the shirt is so uncool that it's cool."A lot of things that become popular on the Web are based around just being ironic and being an inside joke," Abramson said.

"This resonates with a geeky, hip crowd that is very Web-savvy. When something resonates with that circle, crazy things can happen."Abramson said his team had considered licensing the wolf shirt for sale.

CollegeHumor.com, which had 7 million unique Web visitors last month, also has an online store that sells T-shirts with ironic catchphrases and designs, called BustedTees.com. But it appears that the site may have been a bit slow to catch on to its own meme.

"We're kicking ourselves that we didn't," he said.The New Hampshire company that makes the "Three Wolf Moon" shirt said that it doesn't generally mind being the butt of this joke."You have to be able to laugh at yourself," said Michael McGloin, a partner and art director at the Mountain, who added that he finds some of the reviews to be "freaking hilarious."

The company certainly doesn't mind the shirt's recent uptick in sales: "Three Wolf Moon" is sold out, and the Mountain has started printing up a fresh batch.

It seems that the wolf theme was growing in popularity even before the Internet hipsters descended, McGloin said."Wolf shirts are super hot right now," he said. "It's the year of the wolf, I guess."

According to eMarketer reports, this year, online sales in the US alone will jump from $136.8 BILLION to $142.4 BILLION (that's an INCREASE of nearly $6 BILLION in online spending).

Or how about this statistic: Nielsen Consumer Insight reports that in 2009, consumers will spend 17% MORE time on eCommerce websites every DAY!

That's a whole lot MORE people shopping online, and spending a whole lot MORE time doing it!

Consumers Are Increasingly Turning To The Internet As A Way To Save MoneyYou know all those people I just told you about who are coming online to shop? Well, according to this survey, 80% of them say they're now shopping online to save money.

And further, 95% of these people report that they're motivated to buy by offers of free shipping, and 83% are motivated to buy by special prices.

Clearly, 2009 will be the year of the deal!

So if you currently offer special discounts on your site, get them up front and center, so your visitors can find them instantly. Do NOT wait for them to dig around your site and possibly stumble across them.

And if you offer free shipping, don't hide that fact away on your order form. Shout it from the rooftops! It could well be the detail that pushes your visitors into making that crucial buying decision.

BUT ...

Before you put all of your eggs in the "special deal" basket, there's one other related trend you should know about ...

This same survey reports that 88% of people are shopping online in order to save time, and 83% say that they do it because it's less hassle than hitting the malls.

So not only are your visitors coming to your site trying to save money, they're also looking for ease and convenience.

So make sure you're giving it to them, by offering the best customer shopping experience possible.

As we'll all soon discover, it's the websites that offer a combination of pricing and IMPECCABLE customer service that will continue to thrive this year.

Emerging Trend #2:

Consumers Are Making More And More REPEAT Purchases Based On Automated Recommendations.

This recent 2008 Razorfish Consumer Experience report shows that a whopping 65% of online buyers made additional purchases from a website based on automated recommendations the site gave them.

That's 6 out of 10 of your customers buying MORE, based purely on your suggestions for other products they might like.

Sounds like the perfect job for email marketing, right?!

I strongly believe that the people who thrive in 2009 will be those who spend a LOT of time using email marketing to nurture the relationships they have with their customers and subscribers.

But to be really effective in building these relationships -- and in recommending the products people will be MOST interested in -- you're going to need to be smart about your list.

Gone are the days when having a BIG list was your main goal! It's time to think "quality" rather than "quantity."

If you build a huge list filled with people who couldn't care less what you're offering them, then all your email efforts will be wasted.

It's far better to have a smaller list of highly qualified subscribers.

The other thing to pay attention to as you focus on your email efforts in 2009 is the kinds of emails you're sending out.

I'm finding that shorter, more concise promotional messages are far more effective than long, drawn-out emails that bombard the reader with information.

Finally, the savvy email marketer will spend a lot of time TESTING in 2009.

Currently only about 40% of marketers do any testing at all, which is practically criminal, because those who do test are twice as likely to get email marketing conversion rates of 3% or MORE!

So make sure you test different kinds of offers, different subject lines, different times of day and week for mailing, etc., to make sure you're really capitalizing on your email.

Emerging Trend #3:

Shoppers Are Making More Purchases Based on Recommendations Received Through Social Media Sites.

Here's a surprising statistic: 49% of Web users now make a purchase based on a recommendation they received through a social media site (like Facebook, MySpace, and so on).
Okay, maybe that's not so surprising, but you know what is? Apparently only 25% of online retailers created a Facebook page this year!

Despite its clear success rate, marketers have generally been slow to make the leap to social networking.

So if you haven't tested the social media waters, NOW is the time to get started!

Social networking is the perfect way to develop your online presence, and continue to cultivate lasting relationships with your potential customers. It's also, as the statistics show, a great way to start generating extra income!

But before you run off and start building your social networking profiles and pages, you should know that other forms of social media sites will also be crucial tools for your business in 2009.

Take the social bookmarking sites, for instance (like Digg, Delicious, and StumbleUpon).

Currently, 52% of people are using these sites as they search for information online, and a full 81% of users read the links marked as "most popular" or "most emailed."

So what does this mean for you? Another key strategy for you in 2009 will be to create lots of content, and get it to appear on these sites.

You're going to want to write articles that are relevant and useful... and that your readers will want to pass along to their friends, family, and colleagues, and recommend on the social bookmarking sites.

In doing so, you'll continue to raise your online profile, establish yourself as an expert in your field, and build those all-important relationships with your potential customers.

Emerging Trend #4:

A Typical Internet User Is Spending 20% MORE Time Each Day Reading Blogs.

Nielsen Consumer Insight reported in December that people are now spending 20% more time EACH DAY reading blogs.

Do YOU have a blog yet? Do you add new posts to it on a regular basis?

If you haven't started a blog yet -- or if you haven't been giving yours the attention that it deserves -- TODAY is the day you should start!

As with social media, blogging is GREAT for establishing your reputation online, for building relationships with your market, for creating new content for your site, and can even help you get a TOP ranking in the search engines (which in turn can generate up to 7 TIMES more sales).

And you don't need to be a "natural-born writer" to create your own blog, nor do you need to be a technical wizard!

There are plenty of places where you can even get FREE blogs to get yourself started...

... and as for the actual writing, a blog is all about showing YOUR personality, and sharing your opinions and ideas. So don't sweat it if you're not a word nerd. Just write from the heart, and your readers will love it!

Web Surfers Are Spending 46% MORE Time Watching Online Videos.

Check this out: 94% of Internet users now watch online video with some level of frequency, and people now spend a whopping 46% MORE time each DAY watching videos, compared to last year!
