Web frenzy over T-shirt
Something strange happened this week in Amazon.com's apparel section. For a day or two, a black T-shirt featuring an image of three wolves baying at a full moon claimed the top slot at the online store's clothing bestseller list,, beating out the usual, unremarkable mix of Levi's 505 regular-fit jeans, Crocs clogs and Adidas running shoes.
Three Wolf Moon T-Shirt, Available in Various Sizes
And really, why wouldn't you buy the shirt, which is priced from $7.65 to $17.93, depending on your size? Just read the long and growing list of customer testimonials promising earth-shattering experiences or psychedelic vision quests upon purchase.
"I bought this shirt and instantly old girlfriends started calling me again," wrote one reviewer."My doctor says the cancer has gone into remission," wrote another. "
Thanks for changing my life!"The shirt's page at Amazon.com had quietly existed for years without much comment, but after a snarky link from CollegeHumor.com, the "Three Wolf Moon" shirt suddenly sprouted hundreds of five-star ratings.
Reviewers have dreamed up epics about its powers, weaving fantasies involving everything from the Large Hadron Collider in Switzerland to the pop group Duran Duran.
As the joke caught on and got passed around the Web, Photoshopped spoofs of the shirt started appearing online -- featuring corgi puppies, spiders or haddock instead of the now-famous wolves.
CollegeHumor.com, a comedy site started in 1999 by a couple of high school friends who grew up together in Timonium, Md., also claimed victory this week for rigging an online poll run by the state of Nebraska to select a new license-plate design.
The site urged its readers to vote for what it deemed the most boring design available to Nebraska drivers. That gray-and-white plate won.Officials in Nebraska said they monitored Web traffic to screen out visitors coming directly from the humor site, but CollegeHumor.com was still, credibly, claiming the joke a success this week.
"Together we pranked the entire automobile-owning population of Nebraska," wrote a CollegeHumor.com editor, in a Wednesday posting. "Congratulations."
This type of online rabble-rousing appears to be catching on more than ever over the past year, said Tim Hwang, the organizer of ROFLCon, a convention dedicated to celebrating Internet memes.
After all, another Web-based prank crossed over into the real world just last month when a 21-year-old college student, known by the online moniker "m00t," sailed to the top of Time's "most influential person" list in an online poll, beating out the likes of President Obama and Oprah Winfrey.
Gathering nearly 17 million votes, the world's "most influential" person is the founder of another jokey Web culture site, 4chan.org, whose proprietor is known offline by the name Christopher Poole. If you don't get why the shirt, and its reviews, are so funny, don't worry.
CollegeHumor.com co-founder Josh Abramson said it's a case where the shirt is so uncool that it's cool."A lot of things that become popular on the Web are based around just being ironic and being an inside joke," Abramson said.
"This resonates with a geeky, hip crowd that is very Web-savvy. When something resonates with that circle, crazy things can happen."Abramson said his team had considered licensing the wolf shirt for sale.
CollegeHumor.com, which had 7 million unique Web visitors last month, also has an online store that sells T-shirts with ironic catchphrases and designs, called BustedTees.com. But it appears that the site may have been a bit slow to catch on to its own meme.
"We're kicking ourselves that we didn't," he said. The New Hampshire company that makes the "Three Wolf Moon" shirt said that it doesn't generally mind being the butt of this joke."You have to be able to laugh at yourself," said Michael McGloin, a partner and art director at the Mountain, who added that he finds some of the reviews to be "freaking hilarious."
The company certainly doesn't mind the shirt's recent uptick in sales: "Three Wolf Moon" is sold out, and the Mountain has started printing up a fresh batch.
It seems that the wolf theme was growing in popularity even before the Internet hipsters descended, McGloin said."Wolf shirts are super hot right now," he said. "It's the year of the wolf, I guess."

How To Profit From Five Emerging Online Trends In 2009
Thing is, right now, we're being so heavily bombarded by facts and figures pointing out how bleak this year is expected to be, that we're overlooking the GOOD things that are projected to happen in 2009.
Case in point?
According to eMarketer reports, this year, online sales in the US alone will jump from $136.8 BILLION to $142.4 BILLION (that's an INCREASE of nearly $6 BILLION in online spending).
Or how about this statistic: Nielsen Consumer Insight reports that in 2009, consumers will spend 17% MORE time on eCommerce websites every DAY!
That's a whole lot MORE people shopping online, and spending a whole lot MORE time doing it!
So there's no doubt in my mind that there will be plenty of opportunities for you to earn a good income online during 2009, no matter whether you've already got a website up, or you're just getting started ...
... but you're going to need to be pretty savvy about how you spend your time, energy, and resources.
To help you not just survive 2009, but actually THRIVE, I've rolled up my sleeves and gone to work, researching the biggest emerging trends in online business for this year.
I'll show you FIVE of the trends that I think are MOST significant for your business
... then show you what you need to do with your website to capitalize on all five of these trends.
You can watch the details here.
Emerging Trend #1:
Consumers Are Increasingly Turning To The Internet As A Way To Save MoneyYou know all those people I just told you about who are coming online to shop? Well, according to this survey, 80% of them say they're now shopping online to save money.
And further, 95% of these people report that they're motivated to buy by offers of free shipping, and 83% are motivated to buy by special prices.
Clearly, 2009 will be the year of the deal!
So if you currently offer special discounts on your site, get them up front and center, so your visitors can find them instantly. Do NOT wait for them to dig around your site and possibly stumble across them.
And if you offer free shipping, don't hide that fact away on your order form. Shout it from the rooftops! It could well be the detail that pushes your visitors into making that crucial buying decision.
BUT ...
Before you put all of your eggs in the "special deal" basket, there's one other related trend you should know about ...
This same survey reports that 88% of people are shopping online in order to save time, and 83% say that they do it because it's less hassle than hitting the malls.
So not only are your visitors coming to your site trying to save money, they're also looking for ease and convenience.
So make sure you're giving it to them, by offering the best customer shopping experience possible.
As we'll all soon discover, it's the websites that offer a combination of pricing and IMPECCABLE customer service that will continue to thrive this year.
Emerging Trend #2:
Consumers Are Making More And More REPEAT Purchases Based On Automated Recommendations.
This recent 2008 Razorfish Consumer Experience report shows that a whopping 65% of online buyers made additional purchases from a website based on automated recommendations the site gave them.
That's 6 out of 10 of your customers buying MORE, based purely on your suggestions for other products they might like.
Sounds like the perfect job for email marketing, right?!
I strongly believe that the people who thrive in 2009 will be those who spend a LOT of time using email marketing to nurture the relationships they have with their customers and subscribers.
But to be really effective in building these relationships -- and in recommending the products people will be MOST interested in -- you're going to need to be smart about your list.
Gone are the days when having a BIG list was your main goal! It's time to think "quality" rather than "quantity."
If you build a huge list filled with people who couldn't care less what you're offering them, then all your email efforts will be wasted.
It's far better to have a smaller list of highly qualified subscribers.
The other thing to pay attention to as you focus on your email efforts in 2009 is the kinds of emails you're sending out.
I'm finding that shorter, more concise promotional messages are far more effective than long, drawn-out emails that bombard the reader with information.
Finally, the savvy email marketer will spend a lot of time TESTING in 2009.
Currently only about 40% of marketers do any testing at all, which is practically criminal, because those who do test are twice as likely to get email marketing conversion rates of 3% or MORE!
So make sure you test different kinds of offers, different subject lines, different times of day and week for mailing, etc., to make sure you're really capitalizing on your email.
Emerging Trend #3:
Shoppers Are Making More Purchases Based on Recommendations Received Through Social Media Sites.
Here's a surprising statistic: 49% of Web users now make a purchase based on a recommendation they received through a social media site (like Facebook, MySpace, and so on).
Okay, maybe that's not so surprising, but you know what is? Apparently only 25% of online retailers created a Facebook page this year!
Despite its clear success rate, marketers have generally been slow to make the leap to social networking.
So if you haven't tested the social media waters, NOW is the time to get started!
Social networking is the perfect way to develop your online presence, and continue to cultivate lasting relationships with your potential customers. It's also, as the statistics show, a great way to start generating extra income!
I recently wrote an article that explains the basics of getting started with social networking. You can read it here.
But before you run off and start building your social networking profiles and pages, you should know that other forms of social media sites will also be crucial tools for your business in 2009.
Take the social bookmarking sites, for instance (like Digg, Delicious, and StumbleUpon).
Currently, 52% of people are using these sites as they search for information online, and a full 81% of users read the links marked as "most popular" or "most emailed."
So what does this mean for you? Another key strategy for you in 2009 will be to create lots of content, and get it to appear on these sites.
You're going to want to write articles that are relevant and useful... and that your readers will want to pass along to their friends, family, and colleagues, and recommend on the social bookmarking sites.
In doing so, you'll continue to raise your online profile, establish yourself as an expert in your field, and build those all-important relationships with your potential customers.
Emerging Trend #4:
A Typical Internet User Is Spending 20% MORE Time Each Day Reading Blogs.
Nielsen Consumer Insight reported in December that people are now spending 20% more time EACH DAY reading blogs.
Do YOU have a blog yet? Do you add new posts to it on a regular basis?
If you haven't started a blog yet -- or if you haven't been giving yours the attention that it deserves -- TODAY is the day you should start!
As with social media, blogging is GREAT for establishing your reputation online, for building relationships with your market, for creating new content for your site, and can even help you get a TOP ranking in the search engines (which in turn can generate up to 7 TIMES more sales).
And you don't need to be a "natural-born writer" to create your own blog, nor do you need to be a technical wizard!
There are plenty of places where you can even get FREE blogs to get yourself started...
... and as for the actual writing, a blog is all about showing YOUR personality, and sharing your opinions and ideas. So don't sweat it if you're not a word nerd. Just write from the heart, and your readers will love it!
Emerging Trend #5:
Web Surfers Are Spending 46% MORE Time Watching Online Videos.
Finally, a trend that will continue to have a HUGE impact on Internet marketers everywhere -- and really change the way we sell online -- is the growing popularity of online video.
Check this out: 94% of Internet users now watch online video with some level of frequency, and people now spend a whopping 46% MORE time each DAY watching videos, compared to last year!
So if you haven't dipped your toe into the online video world, you'd better get cracking!
Video, like blogging, has multiple benefits for your business:
You can use video in your salescopy in order to more effectively sell your product... you can use it for SEO purposes and traffic generation (Google LOVES video!)... to create informative or educational videos for your niche... and to spread the word about your business.
And you don't need to have a lot of complicated equipment or technical expertise to produce your own quality videos.
If you'd like to learn how to create your own simple videos, and get them up on sites like YouTube, check out this brief "how-to" article I wrote a while ago. It explains all of the basics for you, and gives you a few other resources to give you extra help.
There's no denying that 2009 is going to present some challenges for ALL of us, but you don't have to hide your head in the sand and wait for the recession to blow over!
You can still make serious money online despite the economic downturn, just as long as you focus your efforts on a few key areas, like those I've described.
To give you even MORE help, I've identified a number of other important online trends for 2009, and made some predictions about how to take advantage of them, and put it all into a free two-hour video presentation for you to watch.
And when you watch the video, you'll also discover why 2009 is actually a GOOD time to START a new Internet business, and I'll explain -- in detail -- how you can do it in just FIVE DAYS!
You can watch the details here.
To your success,
Derek Gehl

FREE "recession-busting" video
Will you act during the economic downturn, or simply REACT?
Don't let fear of the recession guide your goal setting plans for
2009. This is a BIG mistake...!
Fear is an emotional response, only good for short-term survival.
When you're in "fight or flight" mode, you're not thinking clearly
about the path you're running... You're just RUNNING!
So your efforts lack strategy, planning, and insight.
I want you to do more than just survive 2009.
Internet shopping is predicted to hit $145.1 Billion in the coming
year, a significant 14% increase -- despite the recession!
Consumers will be spending more time at home, using their
computers for everything from bargain hunting and product
research to upgrading skills.
Studies show this shift is ALREADY well underway...!
I don't want the Big "R" to stop you from pursuing exciting
personal, financial, and business goals in 2009, so I've arranged to
get you exclusive VIP access to an important video that Internet
marketing guru Derek Gehl just put up on his site.
Derek's been successfully selling on the Internet for over a decade
now, and he's brought in over $100 MILLION in sales …

How You Can Make Big Money On Sports Memorabilia
Adults have discovered trading cards as a lucrative investment field. Prestigious auction houses in New York dedicate entire sales to antique baseball cards. Autographs, bats and balls, team clothing, ticket stubs and game programs are bought and sold by sports fans worldwide.
You can cash in on the growing interest in sports collectibles by opening your own sports memorabilia shop or mail order operation.
You can choose to open a retail facility in your city, or you may decide to operate a mail order business specializing in sports keepsakes.
Both can be established for a small investment and run for minimal costs. If you choose to open a retail outlet, you will need an adequate supply of stock to draw customers into your store.
If your stock is slow in the beginning, offer to sell merchandise on consignment. You will display a customer's item in your showcase, handle the sale and pocket a pre-arranged percentage of the amount.
The advantages of a mail order operation are many. You can begin as a trading club with a monthly or bi-monthly newsletter, featuring the items other members have for sale or trade.
Once you have personally gathered a large number of items to serve as a stock supply for your business, you can branch out and begin a retail outlet.
Establishing a retail outlet can be relatively simple. Find a small, inexpensive location in a neighborhood strip mall. You don't need a lot of interior amenities either. Several glass showcases can serve as your sales counter and display area.
Place some shelves on the wall behind your counter to display larger items. Framed pictures or plaques featuring autographed items that you have for sale can be hung on the walls around the room.
Other counters or table space can feature collecting supplies such as binders, card cases, storage boxes, pages for holding cards, etc. Sports posters can fill up any bare spots on your wall.
Contact a local magazine distributor and arrange to have a wide assortment of sports magazines and newspapers for sale in your shop. Include magazines featuring sports news as well as those that pertain to collecting trading cards and keepsakes.
The magazine distributor will also be able to put you in contact with the publishers of pricing guides for sports memorabilia. These price books will sell especially well, because they are updated on an annual basis and will create repeat purchases by customers.
If your city has a minor or major league team, check with the front office about having one or more players visit your store for special autograph sessions.
Fans can come and have the players autograph their cards, programs, etc., or they can purchase some of these items to be autographed from you at a special discounted
price.
While folks are in the store to get their autographs, they will have the opportunity to browse through your stock, make some purchases, and get to know you better.
While many teams charge for these special appearances by players, you should be able to recoup your expenses through the added sales the event will generate.
Also, having an opportunity to become acquainted with your customers and their likes and dislikes will serve you well further down the road.
Getting employees to work in your shop will not be difficult. Teenagers are wild about sports collectibles and would be willing to work for minimum wage. Of course, you will want to have at least one adult on duty at all times to handle any problems that might arise.
This type of job is also a great second job for many adults. Many collectors would enjoy part-time work of this sort simply because it will pay for time spent with their hobby. Don't worry about getting help. You'll be swamped with folks applying
for work in your store.
As mentioned above, you will want to serve as a consignment shop for folks looking to sell valuable items from their own collections. Have a sales contract written up that specifies that you are taking the described merchandise on consignment for 60
days, ad that the seller will receive X amount for the sale of the item.
Of that sale price, you will subtract 25 percent for negotiating the sale. If the item does not sell within the allotted time, the seller will have the option of removing it from your store or lowering the asking price.
You should be able to greatly increase your available offers and make a good profit from consignment sales.
Place an advertisement in your city newspaper or local shoppers' guide informing readers of your location and that you take merchandise on consignment. Your ad might look something like this:

Keep your ad simple. Don't overload it by telling everything about your store. Simply include enough to let the reader know that you have a shop that offers materials in which he will be interested.
Also, remember that your ad should be simple enough to attract teenagers as well as adults. Younger collectors will see your ad and prompt their parents to take them to your store.
Allow the reader to come by and check out your offers for himself. Once he gets to the store, then you can determine where his interests lie and what items in your stock will appeal to his desires. Your ad is designed to capture interest--not close the sale.
If you choose not to start out from a retail facility, but opt instead to sell through the mail, there are a few things to keep in mind.
Decide first how you will market collectibles by mail--will you sell exclusively from your own collection, or will you serve as a clearing house to bring buyer and seller together by mail?
If you plan to sell only your own materials, you will need to develop a catalog listing of what you're offering. Divide it by sport and item type. List all the trading cards, autographs and other collectibles under separate headings. Briefly describe each item.
You may want to develop a code for describing the condition of the materials to include the description: M=Mint Condition; E=Excellent; VG=Very Good; G=Good; F=Fair.
Cards can be listed by player name, year of issue, company issuing the card and condition with the price out to the side. If a card also carries a player's autograph, include that information as well.
A typical description might read:
Ruben Sierra, 1991, Topps, M..................$12.00
Ruben Sierra, 1991, Topps, E, w/autograph.....$18.00
If you don't have a large enough collection of your own, start a trading card and collectibles newsletter. While you will want to include two or three short columns describing recent trends in collecting sports items, price trends or forthcoming collectors items soon to be made available, the main feature of your newsletter will be the trader's section.
Much like a shoppers' tabloid, your newsletter will include classified ads from folks
selling their own items or seeking others who are selling items they want to buy. You charge a small price per word, line or ad to include the listing in your newsletter. Readers will contact each other directly.
You will make your profit from subscriptions, your personal sales of memorabilia offered in the newsletter, and the sale of classified advertising and any display ads that readers may wish to place in your newsletter.
You can establish a reader base by advertising on local bulletin boards, in school newspapers, or a small notice placed in the classified section of national sports or trading card magazines.
Your ad might read:
Free issue "Sports Memorabilia
Newsletter." Brings buyers and
sellers together. Latest news. SASE
to: Collectors, Box 11000, Anytown,
USA 10001
Along with the first free issue of your newsletter, include a subscription coupon and instructions on how to place a classified ad.
You will also want to leave a stack at each of the retail trading card outlets, at the neighborhood newsstand, and in convenience stores that sell trading cards. The ads in the first issue can be placed free of charge by friends and acquaintances
with material to sell.
Offer to let a retail memorabilia store place a display ad in the first issue for free. The response to their ad will encourage them to buy an ad in a future issue. The important thing is to fill up your first issue, making it look attractive and professional.
Your newsletter can be easily typed up on your personal computer. Many software packages are available with templates (sample layouts) of newsletters of two to eight pages. Simply choose a format you like and type your information into the existing columns.
You can even plug in your own graphics for a professional touch. If you don't have access to a laser printer, visit a local print shop and have your newsletter printed out on a laser. The quality will be excellent and will only cost around $2 per page
printed.
Publish bi-monthly in a 4-page format, you can have 1,000 copies of your newsletter printed up for about $80. Charge $15 per classified ad or $75 for a one-third column display ad.
If you feature 2 pages of classified ads, 3 columns wide with 10 ads per column, you'll have space for 90 ads bringing in $900. Add to this $150 income from two display ads placed elsewhere in the newsletter, and you have generated a total of $1,050.
Plan to leave 200 copies at various locations in town and mail the remainder to prospective subscribers.
The first issue will be mailed to prospects in the self-addressed, stamped envelope they provided in reply to your ad. However, subsequent issues will be mailed at your expense through paid subscriptions.
Mailing 800 copies via Third Class would cost $160. Your gross profit per issue will be approximately $810. This doesn't include any sales generated by your own advertising.
Selling sports memorabilia can be highly profitable. A trading card purchased for pennies can bring profits thousands of times the original cost.
More than ever before, youngsters and adults alike are collecting sports keepsakes. You can grab a share of this lucrative market and parley your position into a profitable part- or full-time income.
The decision is yours. Step into the batter's box and take a swing at success, knocking one out of the park! Good Luck!

Is Franchising Your Bag?
Much of the recent success in that area is traceable to two demographic trends: Americans are getting older and feeling pressed for time. Doesn't sound too bright, but it means booming business in franchising circles.
Now I am by no means a Franchise Guru. I've never owned one, worked for one, or even considered one and for good reasons.
First, when I started my publishing and publicity business I wasn't flush financially enough to pay the "freight" on a franchise. Secondly, it seems too much like working for another corporate business to me.
Things are done their way or no way, and you work for two - you and the piece the company takes. That doesn’t mean that it can't be your cup of tea, because many entrepreneurs love franchises.
I'm not going to expound as a franchise expert, but rather I'll give you the facts about the hottest ones to look at if you like franchises. Despite the status of the economy it seems the most stunning growth in franchises has been in the senior-care segment.
Seven senior-care companies ranked in the top 500 in Entrepreneur magazine have grown a total of 370 units in one year, and almost 39% in the past year.
Experts say that despite the large increases, this market hasn't peaked yet. By 2010, 39 million Americans will be 65 or older, and that's almost 20% of the North American population.
About 30% of non-institutionalized seniors live alone, per the Dept. of Health and Human Services Administration on Aging. Many of them need extra help at home or companionship.
As the nation ages and boomers turn 60, this segment of the population will grow.
"Elder care will replace child care as the number one social issue," predicts Jeff Huber, vice president of Home Instead Senior Care - a franchise that grew from 356 to 448 units this past year.
The next hottest area is kids. Parents want their kids to have fun and be well-educated and will spend money to ensure this in good times and in bad. Children's products and services segment of franchises have grown steadily over the year and become one of the top 5 overall categories in term of unit size in 2004.
What's changed? Spending on children is now being fueled not only by baby-boomers, but by Generation X – a group that has $736 billion in spending power.
Another change in the market in the past 25 years is the increase in dual-career families. According to some in the industry, this is an ideal time to enter the education sector of franchises for kids.
Kids' fitness programs are also growing. Caryn Burnier, franchise sales director with Stretch-N-Grow International, says they have added 50 units last year.
"We expect to see more children enrolled in fitness programs in the coming year," says Jerry Perch, vice president of sales/marketing for the 92-unit Kinderdance International Inc. franchise.
Last, but not least, the tech industry is rebounding from its nose-dive in the past. This is because there is an increased dependence by people and businesses on their technology. People need advice on what to buy and what not to buy, and what is the proper solution to their particular need.
Computer Moms International Corp., a training and support provider, has seen a shift in its client base since it started 10 years ago.
The greatest demand for services from the Computer Moms group has shifted to the business market, and the group added 30 franchises last year. The experts claim that the demand for quality full-service training and tech support is vast now and expected to become greater.
Following on the heels of those three areas are franchises in the area of Home Improvement, Fitness, Income Tax Preparation, Business Consulting, Specialty Ice Cream, and Coffee.
So, if you're in the market for a franchise type business pay heed to the up-and-coming hot leaders and let somebody else go for the 7-Elevens.

EBook Writing Business
It pays very well and you can do it in the comfort of your own home. It is very simple to write up an eBook. All you need to do is have Microsoft word and the internet.
Do some research first on the topic. Know everything you can know about it, read up on it and save some quotes in your favorites area.
You may want to stop by the local library to pick up some books on the topic too. That will help you when writing up your eBook.
EBooks should be between 50 – 75 pages depending on the topic and what the assignment is.
After you have thoroughly researched your topic and you know a lot about it you want to create a table of contents. You want the chapters to flow freely from one thought to the other.
Make sure you cover as much as you can about the topic and title each chapter, writing a few notes about what you want to write about -which you will delete later.
The next step would be just to get started on it! Start writing creatively, from your heart, not just spitting out facts on a paper.
People are reading your eBook because they do not want to read and search for information located everywhere about a specific topic.
They want a concise, easy to read; interesting eBook they can print out and curl on the couch with. It goes without saying that no one should ever plagiarize; not only is it unlawful, it is disrespectful.
Always spell check and edit your work by reading it when you have finished. Polish it off by organizing each chapter into an eBook.
Come up with a savvy title that catches the audience.
If you really enjoy this line of business, you could do this full time and quit your day job.
