PICS sets SME – IT award for international e-commerce event

internet marketing blog

The Philippine Internet Commerce Society (PICS) has kicked off its search for this year’s recipients of the prestigious SME – IT Excellence Awards, which will be conferred on the winners at the staging of t he 3rd National E-Commerce Congress and Exhibit next month.

The awards go to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) that have adopted the best practices in e-commerce and the information technology (IT) to achieve various operating efficiencies that improve their productivity and profitability.

SMEs are companies with assets ranging from P3 million to P15 million (for small enterprises) and P15 million to P100 million (for medium).

In terms of personnel, small enterprises are those with 10 to 99 employees, while medium with 100 to 199.

Nominations for the awards must be e-mailed to PICS vice president for technology Robert B. Gantuangco through bgantuangco@inq7.net. Gantuangco heads the PICS’ SME-IT Excellence Awards Committee.

“Assessment of nominees will be based on four major domains that comprise our balanced scorecard, or BSC, a recently developed strategic management system that enables businesses to drive their strategies in measurable terms and conduct follow-ups,” Gantuangco said.

The four domains are financial measurements, customer orientation, effectiveness and efficiency of internal processes, and innovation and learning.

The PICS-SME Excellence Award is one of the major highlights of the 3rd National E-Commerce Congress and exhibit, which is slated at the Grand Ballroom of the Hotel Intercontinental Makati City on November 18-19.

The two-day event showcases the international and national economic significance of SMEs account for 99.6 percent of the country’s total number of enterprises and 70 percent of national employment, but contribute only 32 percent to the total gross domestic product.

In contrast, large companies representing big business account for only 0.4 percent of the country’s total number of enterprises and only 30 percent of national employment, but contribute 68 percent to the GDP.

“It is this wide discrepancy in productivity between large companies and SMEs that we are trying to address through automation or use of IT in various aspects of business operations,” said PICS president Mary Anne D Tolentino.

“In Asia, for example, our SMEs rank relatively low in terms of employment and value-added, trailing South Korea, Japan, China and Indonesia by a wide margin,” Tolentino pointed out.

“So we are bringing in the best minds from various parts of the world to this international event of healp to beef up our SMEs along the fast lane of e-commerce,” said this year’s conference chairman Ramon D. Lizardo.

“With the theme Mobile and E-commerce Meet-The Winning Formula, the two-day event will bring together all the stakeholders of the industry – the telephone companies, mobile telecoms, content providers, business sector, end-users, the government, and all other sectors,” Lizardo added.
